Is a large, horned, six- legged monster which roams mountain tops, lakes and rivers. At night it stalks humans or animals, strangles them, then devours them.

A guardian spirit who protects all creatures and their habitats. She is generous towards human beings, giving gifts and blessings. She is provoked by destructive or cruel behaviour when she withdraws her goodwill and can meet severe punishment.

A malevolent, haunting spirit originating in Jamaican Patois, they live in the buttress roots of silk cotton trees. Duppies come out at night to terrify people.
Singa (Indonesia)
Singa are benevolent and protective creatures that ward off evil spirits without causing any trouble or hardship for humans. They have large bulging eyes and are part human, part water buffalo and part crocodile or lizard. They are worshipped by the Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Ewah (Cherokee)
Ewah is the demon of madness from Cherokee folklore. The very sight of this nocturnal beast is enough to cause permanent, irreversible insanity. He lives in the forest and feeds upon the dreams of children.

Shōjō (Japan)
A sea spirit with red face and hair and a fondness for alcohol. It is ape-like and crouches as it moves along and it runs like a human. Shōjō can only be spotted when a person is intoxicated.
Chupacabra (Puerto Rico/USA/South America)
A small tough creature with rows of Spines on its back. Described as an ‘evil looking’ rodent-like animal with fangs. It has a fondness for sucking the blood of livestock. Unlike most of the mythical creatures I have written about which are thousands of years old, Chupacbra sightings became popular around 1995, although the earliest reports of sightings are from the early 1900s.
Taniwha: (Maori)
Taniwha has the characteristics of a shark and a lizard. It lurks in deep water and dark caves. A taniwha is depicted as a tribal guardian who is dangerous to people from other tribes. It has the ability to dig deep into the earth leaving large holes. A taniwha can be tamed by someone possessing magical powers.
Pishacha (India)
These nocturnal flesh eating demons have bulging red eyes, protruding veins and a dark complexion. Pishacha can make themselves invisible. They can possess human victims and cause insanity. Pishacha can be defeated by being given religious ‘offerings’.
Ijiraq (Arctic):
Evil land spirits that conceal themselves and take the shape of an animal or human. They kidnap children, hide them away and abandon them. Only part they cannot be disguise are there red eyes.
Water Sprite (European):
These beautiful elemental spirits are joyful, animated and cannot be insulted or emotionally hurt. They can breathe water or air, and are passive unless threatened.
Sasquatch (Canada-USA)
Sasquatch or Bigfoot is a muscular, ape-like giant over three metres in height that lives in the forests and mountains of the Pacific North-West of America and Canada. They are mostly peaceful creatures and only turn violent when disturbed or threatened.
Baba Yaga (Russia):
Is a supernatural being who appears as a deformed and ferocious-looking woman who dwells deep in the forest. She flies around in a Mortar & wields a Pestle. She may help or hinder those that encounter her.
Wandjina (Australia):
The Wandjina are cloud and rain spirits. A symbol for fertility. They have have large upper bodies and heads with large eyes but no mouth. Often portrayed with elaborate headdresses indicating different types of storms.
Troll (Scandinavia)
A supernatural being dwelling in isolated rocks, mountains or caves. Live together in small family units and rarely helpful to human beings.

Toyol (Malaysian) Evil baby
Has the appearance of a small baby, with green skin and rows of pointy teeth. The Toyol is kept in ajar and hidden in a dark place until needed. They like to climb on roof tops and steal from people’s houses.
Dokkaebi (Indonesia):
This grotesque Goblin-like creature practices the martial art Ssireum. They love mischief, and playing mean tricks on bad people.
Ahuizotl (Aztec)
A cross between a dog and a monkey with an additional hand on its tail which is used to snatch its prey. It likes human flesh, especially nails, eyes, and teeth.
El Cuero (Chile)
An extremely dangerous lake monster it has claws and bulging red eyes. A ravenous predator, it sucks blood like a Leech. It surges from the water and overwhelms its human prey.
Nyami Nyami ( Zambia/Zimbabwe/Mozambique)
Spirit of the Underworld, it is dragon-like with a snake’s torso and a fish’s head. It is believed to control life in and on the river. It can cause earth tremors when angered.
Banshee (Ireland)
A female spirit seen as an omen of death. Wails if someone is about to die. Appears in a variety of guises: an ugly, frightening hag, but also can appear as a beautiful woman. She is sometimes seen washing the bloodstains out of the fated person clothes.
Şüräle (Russia)
A male monster that lives in the forest. Has long fingers, a horn on its forehead, and a furry body. Carries a woodcutter’s axe, creeps up on his victims and then tickles them to death.
The Hombre Caiman
A legendary creature who was a fisherman and was converted by the spirit of the Magdalena River into an alligator. Has both alligator and human features and is said to return every year to hunt human victims.
Asasabonsam (Ghana/Ivory coast)
This Vampire lives in a dense forest. It uses its hooked claws to hang from trees and attacks victims using its feet, it then drains its victims blood with it’s sharp teeth.
Popobawa, ( Zanzibar and Tanzania
The creature is a one eyed bat winged demon who appears as a human being by day but has supernaturally high strength and attacks its victims during the night. Smearing oneself in pig’s oil can repel an attack.
Basilisk (Europe)
A legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance. Hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent or toad. It leaves a trail of deadly venom in its wake.
